“Decisiveness is a characteristic of high-performing men and women. Almost any decision is better than no decision at all.” Brian Tracy
Decision making is a process that plays an important role in our daily lives. Important decisions, when carefully carried out, will change the course of our lives.
We make decisions from the very minute we wake up till we go to sleep and every decision we make during the course of the day has an impact on our lives in some way or the other.
According to psychologists, when making a decision, we form opinions and choose actions via mental processes which are influenced by biases, reason, emotions, and memories.
The simple act of deciding supports the notion that we have free will. We weigh the benefits and costs of our choice, and then we cope with the consequences.
Tony Robbins once said, “It’s not what we do once in a while that counts, but our consistent actions ultimately determine who we become and where we go in life."
The answer is our decisions. It’s in these moments that our destiny is shaped. More than anything else, our decisions, not the conditions of our lives determine our destiny.”
He said that there are three key decisions that dictate the quality of our lives.
Carefully choose what to focus on. Where focus goes, energy flows. What you focus on and your pattern for doing so shapes your entire life.
Which area do you tend to focus on more? What you have or what’s missing from your life? Do you tend to focus more on what you can control or what you can’t?
Observe your behavior and figure out if you are putting enough energy into the things right for you or if you are exerting all your focus on something that isn’t going to help you achieve your goals.
If you can’t make decisions, someone else runs your life
Decision 2: Figure out, What does this all mean?
Ultimately, how you feel about your life has nothing to do with the events in it or with your financial condition or, what has (or hasn’t) happened to you. Does your life revolve around other people or does your world revolve around your decisions?
The quality of your life is controlled by the meaning you give these things. Your life takes on whatever meaning you give it. With each meaning comes a unique feeling or emotion and the quality of your life involves where you live emotionally.
Once you create a meaning in your mind, it creates an emotion, and that emotion leads to a state for making your third decision.
Momentum is built on a series of small decisions that achieve a clear goal.
Decision 3: What will you do?
The actions you take are powerfully shaped by the emotional state you’re in. Emotions are created when the brain interprets what’s going on around us through our memories, thoughts, and beliefs. This triggers how we feel, and behave. All our decisions are influenced by emotions somehow or the other.
Different emotions affect decisions in different ways. If you’re down, you might be more willing to settle for things that aren’t in your favor, such as not putting yourself forward for promotion, or remaining in unhealthy environments.
Emotions can affect not just the nature of the decision, but also the speed at which you can make them. Anger can lead to impatience and risky decision-making. If you’re excited, you might make quick decisions without considering the implications and consequences, as you surf the wave of confidence and optimism about the future. While if you feel afraid, your decisions may be clouded by uncertainty and caution, and it might take you longer to choose.
To put it simply, Robbins suggests that:-
a deliberate focus on what brings value and happiness to achieving your life’s purpose; assigning a positive meaning to the events of your life to deepen the quality of our life; and resolutely and consistently identifying focuses and meanings that will bring balance, joy, and richness to life’s incredibly beautiful journey.
It is always our choice at every moment.
Choose wisely; choose well.
Life is so very precious.
